Straight to the dot-sig

Dale Franks, writing about the Summers flap:
[H]ere's a general rule about life. By definition, anyone who prefaces his or her
remarks by declaiming a need to "speak truth to power" is an insufferable ass
. This is especially true if the person is a tenured professor who faces no prospect at all of any disciplinary action, or, indeed, any negative consequences whatsoever. In that case, "speaking truth to power" is little more than a consummate act of moral vanity.
My university is hip-deep in them. Maybe we should send them roses.
